This happened a couple of years ago. I had just gotten my dream job in another state for a multinational corporation. It paid more than double what I had been getting so I quit my job, sold my house and moved over 1000 miles away to a new city. The first week was just the usual onboarding bullshit and by week two I had been granted access to all the software and was spending time familiarizing myself with it.
While reviewing the expenses on the facilities P&L report I noticed a few things that looked odd. Things like nice round dollar amounts (i.e. $1,600 instead of $1617.34) on items that would have required tax. There were also identical purchases to the same store within an hour of each other for the exact same amount by different people. Along with a lot of other little things that appeared to be put in place as subterfuge. All these purchases were made using the company's purchasing cards that they had issued to people in management. I did some quick research on Google about some of the company names listed to see what services they provided and could not find any evidence that some of the companies ever existed. I requested scanned copies of the receipts that had been submitted for approval and while waiting for them took the time to casually ask some of the employees about what they knew about these companies. No one ever recollected hearing about or seeing them come onto the property to perform any services.
When the scanned receipts came I called the phone numbers listed on them and they either came back as no longer in service or to a wrong number. The business addresses listed were all in strip malls and I drove to them to see if those were at least legitimate. One example is of a receipt for a cleaning company and the address listed was to a hydro dipping company that had been there for years and had never offered cleaning services. I put scans of all the invoices into an email and sent it to my supervisor explaining that I did not feel these were legitimate expenses and felt that the facility needed a full audit.
My supervisor called me a short time later wanting me to explain what the email was about. I told him that I wasn't 100% of the way sure of what it was but that I sure as hell knew what it looked like to me. My supervisor asked me what I thought it looked like and I told him that it looked like his star employee (we'll call him Jay) had been embezzling thousands of dollars a month from the business for several years. My supervisor suddenly got really pissed at me and told me that the Jay he knew was a good Christian and a family man and that I shouldn't be slandering him the way I was. He also told me if I would have just asked Jay about these expenses that he would have been able to tell me what they were about without me having to sneak around like I was.
Frustrated I spent more time gathering evidence and putting it into a three ring binder. There was no more assuming there was embezzlement going on at this point it was a sure thing. I scanned the whole binder and emailed it back to my supervisor along with notes explaining how each and every one of the expenses were bullshit and how the invoices were all forgeries to fake companies. Once again he was pissed but was at least willing to listen to my concerns and look at my evidence this time. He told me that he would be flying there in a few days for meetings and we would both sit down with Jay, discuss our concerns, and get to the bottom of it then.
The morning my supervisor flew in he told Jay that he needed to pencil time in the next day for a meeting with me about expenses I didn't think were legitimate. After my supervisor left for the day Jay came into my office and slammed the door behind him. He told me that what I had been telling our supervisor was bullshit and that I better figure out a way to retract it. He told me that if I didn't he'd make certain I was fired and that would still be the least of my concerns because he knew where I lived and knew people that would happily fuck me up. I just told Jay that we both needed to sit down with our supervisor the next day and straighten things out there.
The next morning while pulling into work I noticed Jay's car already there which was odd because I always beat him into the office. I went into the building and didn't see Jay anywhere so I assumed he was in his office upstairs. I had to get some things out of my car and saw my supervisor drive up while I was in the parking lot. We spoke for a few minutes outside and as we walked into the office there was a loud "thud" that came from the upstairs office. It kind of sounded like a small bookcase falling over. My supervisor chatted a few more minutes, told me we would have our meeting in an hour, then went upstairs to say good morning to Jay. Minutes later he came down and mentioned that it was odd to him that Jay was upstairs "sleeping" on the floor in the middle of his office. I asked him if he was sure Jay was sleeping and mentioned we might want to go check on him. We both went upstairs and Jay was face down on the floor in a puddle of saliva and piss. He was breathing but it was really labored. We called 911 and they talked us into putting Jay into the recovery position as we waited for the ambulance. The ambulance came and they carted Jay's fat ass off to the ER.
A short time later the local HR manager showed up to see what all was going on with Jay being taken to the ER from work. They asked questions about whether or not Jay was under more stress than usual and my supervisor mentioned that we were going to have a meeting with him that morning because there was "a chance" there was some embezzlement going on. The HR manager perked right up and asked what information we had about the potential embezzlement. My supervisor said I could share the emails and files I had shared with him to the HR manager. After an hour or so of reviewing the files the HR manager looked at my supervisor and said "There's not a chance Jay was embezzling money. He was definitely embezzling money!" The HR manager got up and said that she was going to have to call corporate about this. My supervisor tried to stop her by saying that we should just handle all of this locally but it didn't work.
After corporate was called the shit hit the fan. I was told I had to be on a conference call with HR, the audit team and every level of management up to the head of North American operations. My boss told me to keep my pie hole shut unless I was asked anything and to only answer the question and not offer anything more. During the call the head honcho became infuriated and yelled that there was no way that Jay had acted alone. He said that he couldn't trust anyone at that facility anymore and that he was just going to shut it down and fire everyone there. My heart sunk. It had only taken me three weeks at that point to shut down the whole facility and get all 15 employees fired as well as myself. The next week seemed like it took forever and finally the local HR manager called me and told me that they were able to talk the head honcho out of shutting the location down.
tl;dr Three weeks after starting a new job I almost got all 15 employees and myself fired for exposing embezzlement.
