For context, i used to work at Chipotle and Food Lion and other small jobs.
I recently got hired at a sales company representing the computer/printer brand HP. Obviously, this is a huge step up for someone who was doing small part-time jobs like the ones I mentioned above. I'm 20 and never considered myself as "young and dumb," but today, I flew way too close to the sun.
I picked up some hours at Best Buy, and it's my second weekend there. Basically, my job entails: stand around, sell some shit and what I knew but didn't follow this week - don't leave your post.
Because I'm not employed by Best Buy, I wrongly thought there wasn't a supervisor watching my every move. Well, there was. The store manager.
Over the past two days, I've taken to hanging out in the break room while the foot traffic was slow. I have a non-existent perception of time. It's either too fast or too slow.
From the outside perspective, it looked like i was in the break room for hours and not switching back and forth like I was actually doing.
We'll fast forward to today, and I'm hanging out in the breakroom and I'm about to leave and go back to my position in the laptop section when a text pops up from [WORK] Trey
My heart fucking sank to my stomach as I read "the store manager called are you not assisting customers on the floor" I lied and said I had a family emergency I was taking care of and immediately got back to the floor.
I then hunted down the store manager told another lie and said I was doing some sales modules, he called my bluff stating he's been working with sales reps for 18 years and knew i was slacking off. He didn't tell me to leave, and his tone was "I'm not angry. I'm disappointed," and kinda chuckled while I told him I was going to straighten up.
I thought I was in the clear but boy, was I wrong.
Around 6:00 pm, an unknown number popped up on my screen, and I declined the call as I've been getting so many spam calls lately. The number called again, and I picked up
"Hey op my name is x with HP, I'm going to have you clock out report your sales and grab a manger so we can have a chit chat about a report we received" I then told the truth or well part of it. I told her I hadn't been feeling well, so I've been trying to rest a bit. That's part of the truth. I've been dealing with some huge personal things lately and haven't been in the right mindset, but I need money, so I didn't call out.
She told me that until they get an answer from the best buy manager that I shouldn't report to the store and they are either going to turn it into a coaching moment or a termination. She then asked what my next work days were, and I told her that I had shifts at Staples. She said
"Oh ok report for those shifts since they haven't contacted us, and you're in the clear for that store, but you might lose hours and coverage for best buy depending on what the manager says. This isn't really an issue he should have reported so largely as it sent out a report to around dozen or so people and a phone call to your supervisor would have sufficed but we will tell him that later just report for your staples shifts and best buy will decide where to go from here"
Tl;dr dumbass 20 y/o gets first ever "go ahead and clock out for me" ππ
Edit: my supervisor just told me that this is a coaching moment and I will not be terminated. Please feel free to continue giving me advice. I am very thankful for the chance at redemption and this will 100% impact my ethics from now on.
2nd edit: I appreciate yalls advice and constructive criticism. I will definitely take this as an opportunity to grow.
