I’m really upset about what happened when I introduced a girl I’ve been seeing to my family. She’s kind, gentle, and understanding, and I wanted the meeting to go well, but it was a complete disaster.
Here’s what happened:
• My mum asked her, “Why are you with a Black man?”
• She said she doesn’t eat certain foods, but my mum kept insisting she eat it.
• My sister laughed when the girl talked about her grandmother’s death.
• My dad made comments about marriage roles, saying the man should be the head of the family.
• My mum spoke in our language to my sister while ignoring her, and then stopped my sister from translating what was being said.
• On top of that, my mum compared her to another person’s “bad experience” and acted annoyed and resentful toward her.
By the end of it, she felt unwelcome, uncomfortable, and possibly judged. I was embarrassed, frustrated, and honestly angry at my family for treating a guest like this.
I supported her through all of this and told her I absolutely do not agree with what my family said. I like her a lot, and I understand if she decides this is too much.
TL;DR: After this experience, I’ve decided that I will never bring anyone to meet my family again. I don’t want anyone else to go through what she experienced.
I just want to know: how messed up is this situation? Am I overreacting by being angry at my family?
