Obligatory this happened a few years ago, not today.
My wife and I lived by the beach in SoCal for a couple of years after we got married. I went down to the beach around sunrise one morning to do some surf fishing and eventually decided to do some swimming. There was absolutely nobody on the beach as far as the eye could see and I wasn't going far, so I felt it was safe to put my wallet, keys, and wedding ring in a pile on my t-shirt and go jump in the water. I had only been married for about six months, so I was paranoid about losing the ring in the water, even though it was pretty tight on my finger. I even slid my car key through the ring to make it less likely to get dropped and lost in the sand when I came back and picked it up. So, feeling all proud of myself for being responsible, I went and jumped in the water for a few minutes. I kept an eye on my stuff, and no one even came onto the beach while I was in the water, let alone came near my stuff. Eventually I got cold and got out of the water. I went back to get my stuff and my wallet and keys were still there... But the ring wasn't! I spent the next two hours combing through the sand but never found it. To this day my wife threatens that, if I lose another ring, she will have one permanently tattooed on my finger...
TL/DR: took my ring off on a deserted beach so I wouldn't lose it while I swam close by, only to have it disappear anyway.
