I (35F) was walking home and had to cross the street. Two men on their bicycles were on the road, so I stayed on the curb to let them pass. For whatever reason, the first one started braking near where I was standing, almost as if to stop in front of me. He turned slightly in my direction and licked his lips (though it could have been because he was thinking of saying something to the guy behind him) or just had dry lips.
It was weird, and I have had so many instances of catcalling or lewd gestures done in my direction, that my unthought reaction was to flip him off. He was really surprised, and the man behind him flipped me off in response. They rode for 1 or 2 minutes (probably talked among themselves what the hell was that about); I kept walking, and they caught up to me again and the man asked me why and what happened, he didn’t understand why I did that.
I told him how I experienced the interaction and he apologised and said he honestly didn’t mean or wanted to look at me that way. I apologised for flipping him off, and we went our respective paths.
I usually am a relatively chill person and assume the best of everyone, but last summer I had so many bad experiences that I think I just instinctively reacted very badly to something relatively minor.
TL;DR: I thought a cyclist was being lewd towards me and reacted badly showing him the finger. I do feel bad since he didn’t mean it.
