TIFU by calling out my best friend of 10 years for constantly complaining about his wife’s lack of interest and now he’s cut me off completely
I need to get this off my chest because I think I just fucked up a 10-year friendship and I’m not sure how to handle it.
We’ve been close since we were younger. He’s 37, married with three kids. For the last several years almost every time we talk he complains about their sex life. Same things over and over: she never wants it, they both work too much, she only gets in the mood on vacation, he’s tired of the drought.
I used to just listen. But it wasn’t only his side of the story. Over the years a few of the women in our friend group mentioned things his wife had said to them. How he does almost nothing around the house. How the kids are mostly on her. How she’s exhausted all the time. Years ago there was even a quiet rumor that she’d told a couple people if he didn’t start stepping up she was done. Nothing dramatic ever came of it and everyone moved on, but it stuck with me.
So when he kept complaining while never talking about helping more with the kids or the house, it started bothering me. I wasn’t trying to get in the middle of their marriage. I just kept hearing both sides and it felt like he was living in a different reality from what his wife was telling people.
A few weeks ago he came back from a Mexico trip and told me the whole time she was trying to have sex with him. Constantly. And it turned him off because “that wasn’t like her.”
That was the breaking point. I got in his face and told him what I thought. Told him he’s been complaining for years that she never wants him and the second she does he rejects her because it doesn’t match the version of her he’s been bitching about. Told him three kids and almost zero real help from him is why she’s exhausted most of the time. Told him maybe the problem isn’t just her and he needs to look at his own effort instead of only blaming her.
He went silent. Hasn’t spoken to me since. No texts, no calls, nothing. Some mutual friends have heard about it and a few are saying I went too far and it wasn’t my place.
I’m stuck on what to do next. Part of me still feels like a real friend would have said something years ago after hearing what his wife had been saying. Another part of me wonders if I just damaged a 10-year friendship over someone else’s marriage.
How should I approach this from here? Should I reach out, leave it alone, or is there a better way to handle the fallout with him and the rest of the group?
TL;DR: Best friend of 10 years has complained for years about his dead bedroom. I finally called him out after hearing his wife’s side from mutual friends and after he rejected her advances on a vacation. He’s now cut me off and some friends think I overstepped. Looking for advice on how to move forward.
