Obligatory this happened just this weekend. A bit of background. I am a huge computer nerd spending most of my time on the computer doing various things. I also built the pc myself which led up to the fuck up.
So ever since I upgraded my computer with a new graphics card and processor about two years ago I have experienced rather high temperatures and loud fans. I initially did not think about it as I assumed I just needed more fans to pull out the hot air. I therefore installed another one and the temps got slightly better.
I then ran my computer like this for about 1.5 years up until this week where I picked up a new ssd as I was running low on storage. As I was already opening up the pc to install it I figured that I might as well check dust buildup inside the case. This was the point where I realised my fuck up. After opening up the case I saw a huge dust build up indicating that unfiltered air had made its way into the case. So at that point I checked the fans.
Upon checking the fans I then saw that I had been running all 4 case fans as intakes (for those of you unfamiliar with case layouts you want to have the same amount of intake as exhaust) which meant that I had been pushing air into the case with nowhere for the hot air to escape leading to all the hot air lingering in the case.
So I flipped the fans the correct way and booted up the computer and proceeded with monitoring the temperatures as I played some games. And saw that the temperatures were normal. No longer uncomfortably high.
So folks. If your computers temperatures are unreasonably high check your fans.
TLDR: I had flipped my computer fans in such a way that there was no way for hot air to escape, leading to high temperatures and bad performance.
