—am also a dumbass.
I’ve been handling auto injectors since 2014 (learned with EpiPens in EMS). But I’m an autoimmune disease mess and I’ve taken my own crap over the years. This time Humira, for a super fun disease called Behçet’s.
I opened the package, prepped my skin, opened both ends of the injector, grabbed my skin and the pen [upside down] and PAH, fucking auto injector needle right into my thumb. I was so mad. It just got everywhere. I don’t think much got in at all and I was inflamed as fuck, so I used the second pen I had [correctly], then freaked out that I might’ve gotten some in when it hit my thumb and called the specialty pharmacy, left a message on the urgent line since they were closed, and the pharmacist was totally chill, which helped. He was all, “sometimes doctors like…use a loading dose with Behçet’s and maybe yours didn’t but we can pretend it’s that with the amount you might’ve gotten in” (ie it wasn’t a dangerous amount)
Except there are some side effects. So I’m kinda exhausted today and it’s because I’m an idiot who holds licensure to handle standard and auto injectors, but does it wrong on themselves.
Tl;Dr— auto injected expensive, hefty medication into my thumb by holding it the wrong way (on myself, at home), and I have to deal w added dose side effects now
