TIFU by doing something I didn’t know was illegal

When I was 12, I went to South Carolina to see some extended family. We ended up going to the Columbia Zoo and I got to some area with some monkeys and a little pool. I saw a bunch of coins in it and thought “If people are just gonna throw these away, they must be begging for someone to take them”. So when no one was looking, I reached my arm into the pool and grabbed as many as I could and stuffed my pockets. I looked it up found out it was illegal but I doubt I would’ve gotten in too much trouble anyway. I was old enough to know that no one found out about it and that nothing was gonna happen, but I still made a promise to myself to never do it again.

TL;DR: I went to a zoo and saw a pool of coins, took some and found out it was illegal later.
