Onligatory: This actually happened last summer
So before I left for college, my mother bought me to her workplace because she had just stopped being a nurse for a Hospital (her first time ever on shift was just before COVID started. It was a rough 2 years) and she instead took a job at the State Department of Health. When she took me, it was towards the end of the day, and only 1 or 2 people where there, whom she already knew from the interview and onboarding process.
Now to give some contaxt, my mother and I look very different. She is short, about 5'4", dark skin then me, 120 pounds and very quiet. I am 6'5", on the lighter side, 250/60 pounds and am quiet as well, but can be not quiet when around people I know.
The following summer, I got an internship at a defense contractor (I'm an Engineering Student) l, and it was great because the company I was at put me near the military base, which was only a 15 minute ride from my mom' work. So everyday in the morning, we would drive to her job, I would drop her off and go to my work, and then pick her up on the way home. We used a single car, saved gas, and we got to spend sometime together in the morning and afternoon even though we where both working.
Now my mother's job has a lot to do with Community Outreach, because she is the regional Tuberculosis Specialist and our area got flooded with refugees and other immigrants, so between that and the general location beijg very rural, a lot of...suspicious...people tended to come to the building and she would also sometimes have to contact all those people. The actual building itself has about 5 women and 1 guy, but the guy is the health and safety inspector for business as well as the wildlife and game warden so he is not often in the building. This means that some of my mother's coworkers carried Stun Guns and Tasers, just in case somebody went nuts, because they are in a really rural area.
Now, the final piece of context is that, when I am dressed up, hair combed, clean shaven or not, I look significantly older then I actually and I also do not look like my mother. To the point where, when I went to the Engineering Career Fair, before I shaved I looked like John Wick, and afterwards several recruiters though I was in my 30s. I have been mistaken for a Prof before even though I am an Undergrad student. For this internship, I was in Business Casual, and I was trying to make a good impression. My hair was long, but combed. I was originally clean shaven, but at this point I was actually going to shave that night. I was wearing khakis and a polo shirt, so I looked like an actual Engineer as well.
The final piece of info you need to know is that, while I didn't work explicitly in a SCIF, I did work in am area where everyone, even me, had a clearance and so to get to the main workspace or storage Reas you had to swipe through 2 doors at minimum. For this reason, it was pretty common to just get up, get some coffee and go over to someone else workstation and ask for help/make some small talk while the coffee brewed. Sometimes it was in a different room, but like I said, once you swiped in, you where in the clear to speak freely basicall, because everyone had a clearance, was on the same project, and everything was swipe protected.
One day, I left early, because I had hit the max hours for that week, and the company enforced strict hour limits on interns, because interns had to be paid OT, unlike the normal saleried employees. I was happy to get put early, and was just cruising when I got to my mom's work, and I decided to go in and meet her at her workstation. I stupidly thought/assumed in my head that everything would be fine once I got through the door. It wasn't even an explicit thought, I just automatically did it. So I opened the door, and nodded Hi to the two coworkers of my mom that I did know, and started to walk into the bacK, where my mom's workstation was. It's a small building and for my stature it took only 5 steps to get to the doorway. I was in such a great mood, because it was a Friday and I got let put early, and generally things where going good that week. I was so focused on other things, I apparently didn't hear another lady start speaking, whoch to be fair she was barely audible until she was yelling.
She ended up blocking my way, and shouting her head off, saying things like, "Who are you?" and, "Leave now, or we will call the police!" and of course she was holding her stun gun and pointing it at me. I was super confused, as was most of the other people, at this point cause I was not paying attention, but the commotion bought my mom out, as between the travel time and this chaos, she had already stated packing up for the day. She of course quickly explained that I was her son, and everyone had a good laugh, because I looked so much like a grown guy, and my frame is so big, the lady thought I was some sort of nut looking to hurt my mom, which of course I was not.
To this day, that Lady always looks at me with suspicion, but everyone else knows who I am now, so it is fine now. My mom explained it to me that I cant just waltz in because there are a lot of unsavoey people that come in, and I was super confused why I was on the recieving end of getting tased, and in retrospect this was def on me, but in the moment it was definitely a fuck up. To make it more funny, my mom's boyfriend(that feels weird to say cause they are in their 50s, but I guess that's the term) works at the same company, but he works explicitly on the nearby Military Base, within a SCIF. He of course looks nothing like me or my mom, but gives off the same vibes as us, and this same incident happened to him and my mom had to explain to him that same thing.
Like I said, in retrospect this was def on me, and I should have known not to do this, but I gotta admit it's a little bit funny.
TL;DR I assumed I could waltz into my mom's work, and nearly got tased.
