This happened a few weeks ago, but I still claim the right to post about it.
Context: I just started college. I’m in a new state, I don’t know anyone here. I live in a dorm room by myself. I was supposed to have a roommate, but when we were texting beforehand, I told her that I was a transgender woman, and she ghosted me and didn’t show up. One side of the room has all my stuff, the other has an empty mattress, an empty closet, empty dressers, and an empty desk.
I also, for some reason, brought four sets of bedsheets. I quickly realized why I wouldn’t need that many, so I just have a lot to spare.
The event: One day, a few people who live on my floor knocked at my door asking if I had a spare air mattress that they could borrow. I don’t have one, but there is an entire unused mattress in my dorm room, so I said they could take it. On their way out, I also gave them a set of bedsheets. It was a completely unused set of purple sheets, folded up in my drawer, and I handed it over.
The next day, they brought the mattress back. They gave me back the sheets, still folded and unused, saying that they “didn’t want to get them dirty.” Thinking nothing of it, I thanked them, and they went on their way.
Cut to a few days later. I’m changing my sheets, and I decide to use the purple bedsheets that my neighbors didn’t use. I pull them out of my drawer, flip them over… and there’s a huge, obvious brown stain on the top sheet.
If I had, at any point, flipped the folded bunch of sheets over, I would have noticed it. I don’t know how it got there. My mom washed all of my sheets before move-in. I don’t know if it was something in the bag they were in, or something in the drawer I put them in. I also have no idea what the stain is. Obviously, I didn’t use the sheets afterward (until I washed them myself), but I’m definitely afraid I’ve already ruined my reputation with the people I’ll pass in the hallway for the next year.
TLDR: New college student. Neighbors borrow my mattress. I give them sheets. They don’t use them. Days later, I realize I didn’t see the brown stain on the other side of the sheets.
