A friend of mine helps run a small community theater and asked if I could come by and help clean up before their dress rehearsal. Figured I'd be useful for once.
I was sweeping the stage when I noticed dozens of little pieces of colored tape stuck to the floor. Some were barely an inch long, others had arrows drawn on them. Looked like leftover junk from rehearsals so I started peeling them off.
Took me a good 20 minutes. I was actually pretty proud of how clean the floor looked.
Then the stage manager walked in and asked where all the spike marks went.
Turns out those tiny pieces of tape told the actors where to stand, where furniture needed to go and which spots were lined up with the lighting. They'd spent several rehearsals getting everything exactly right.
I had removed every single one.
They had to delay the rehearsal while everyone tried to reconstruct the positions from old photos and recordings. I stayed for nearly five hours helping measure stuff and put new tape down.
My friend was surprisingly nice about it but I could tell he wanted to kill me. I also missed a dinner reservation I'd made that evening.
Apparently the one thing you should never clean at a theater is the fucking floor markings.
TL;DR: Volunteered to clean a theater stage, removed all the positioning tape thinking it was trash and delayed an entire dress rehearsal. Spent five hours helping fix it.
