This happened when I was in my early 20s working retail in America.
I decided to save up for a used Toyota Matrix with manual transmission. I was (and still am) Latina, and grew up around manual transmission vehicles, but had no firsthand experience driving them.
So I arrive at the dealership, sign for the car without test driving it, and proceed to drive home. I stalled and jerked the car for about 7 miles, and all the nearby drivers were really mad at me. I wasn’t pulled over, but probably should’ve been.
Later that week my store manager offered to give me a driving lesson, and it helped. My main issue was getting into first gear, the other gears were easy. I figured it out.
TL;DR: I bought a car I didn’t know how to drive and upset a lot of drivers. My manager taught me how to operate it, and thanks to him I wasn’t a menace.
