So I was in summer school because I failed my first semester of history. For having to be in the same classroom for 4 hours straight every day it was actually going pretty well. Until now. For some more context, this class had a majority of hispanic students. I was some white kid in the corner who was kind of funny sometimes. We were playing a Kahoot, and this girl (who was hispanic) made her name the racial slur that would be derogatory towards hispanic people. I thought it was meant to rhyme with “weiner” - as if it was like a dick joke or something. It was not! Because of my very poor misinterpretation of this word, I decided to yell out the word in a cheering way because the girl had moved up to the top three. Immediately the room went absolutely silent and everyone was staring at me. I look over to my friend with a very confused look on my face and she says “Dude that’s like the N word but for hispanic people”. I started to momentarily profusely apologize and put my head down for like 10 minutes and was silently crying out of humiliation. At some point the girls in the center table who were all friends with the girl who made her name the word came over and hugged me and assured me it was okay. This was nearly 2 years ago and I still think about it at least like twice a week.
TL;DR In a room that happened to be a majority of hispanic people I saw someone’s kahoot name, thought it was referencing a dick joke, so I very loudly cheered out the name. It was not a dick joke.
