TIFU by preventing a child from being adopted, possibly forever

This literally just happened now, and I’m still kind of feeling as if it’s not real. I work as a caretaker in an orphanage, this is my third month and I’m still learning the ropes. I work with abandoned kids every day, and we have learned that one of the boys was in the process of adoption. I was so happy about him because he’s very gentle and kind, and unlike other children we have has qualities such as empathy and high intelligence that could get him far in life.

One day as I was working other kids followed me and asked about the traveling coffer. I absent-mindedly said the boy is getting adopted, figuring it’s a sealed deal, not knowing any legal background behind adoption. This is where my fuck-up happened.

Apparently, and I was not aware of this, adoption is kept secret from biological parents who have basically lost all right to their child. Other kids have told the boy he’s getting adopted, and he probably told his grandma when he was away for the weekend.

As a consequence, they filed a complaint against the adoption process (again, it’s their legal right), and it was cancelled. He was literally supposed to be adopted in few days. I am broken, and I simply don’t know what to think. Honestly, I think I will quit this job, but I’m still waiting to see what will happen.

TL;DR

I absent-mindedly told the orphanage boy he’s getting adopted, his family learned and stopped the process.
