I started smoking about a year ago because I was stressed out and, honestly, thought it looked cool. But after this, I might’ve been scared straight.
I genuinely almost killed everybody.
So, I got home and lit a cigarette, but I didn’t finish it because I got distracted thinking about playing Red Dead Online. I hopped on for about 30 minutes, yada yada, went downstairs and talked to my gramma about politics and whatnot. Everything was still fine.
Eventually, I put on some music, threw on my headphones, and went out back to smoke another cigarette because I’m a fiend.
I had a full, proper smoke session, put the cigarette out in the ashtray, and headed back inside. As I walked past the family room window on my way upstairs, I caught the tiniest glimpse of something out of the corner of my eye. A wisp. A little flicker. The smallest hint of a flame. It’s like someone was telling me “LOOK! LOOK WHAT YOU’VE DONE!”
And I knew.
I ran outside, and both of our recycling bins were up in flames.
I wasn’t even thinking. I tried to grab one and pull it away from the bushes, and ended up scorching my hand in the process. Thankfully, I found the garden hose, and my neighbor came over to help me put everything out and calm me down.
I don’t think I’ve ever been that terrified in my life. It was genuinely traumatizing to realize how badly things could’ve gone because of one stupid mistake.
So, please, MAKE SURE YOUR CIGARETTE BUTTS ARE COMPLETELY OUT BEFORE YOU THROW THEM AWAY.
I got lucky. I almost burnt down my neighborhood because I just threw it in the recycling.
TL;DR: I tossed a cigarette butt in the recycling and it went up in flames, always make sure they’re out.
