Obligatory “didn’t actually happen today,” it was my junior year of high school but I’m reminded of it every now and then and cringe. Also gonna try to be vague and not name names.
So I went to high school with a lot of children of celebrities, but wasn’t friends with any of them — or so I thought. This kid and I were pretty friendly with each other freshman year, but over the years we weren’t placed in classes together as often and just didn’t see each other as much, but we always said hi whenever we did cross paths. He’s pretty successful himself now and I’m super happy for him, he was always a great guy.
We had one class together junior year. One day we had a sub teacher, who looked over the list of names in class joked “John [famous name]? is that like *Robert* [famous name]?” To which my friend responded “Yeah, he’s my dad.”
And for some reason, I just didn’t believe him. I think I was just so confused how I could know this guy for three years and consider him a friend and also have no idea that his dad was a celebrity. How could I have not known? The worst part is that I made him prove it. He pulled up a photo on his phone, and I dropped it, but it still felt so strange.
The *actual* worst part is I didn’t find out until I got home that day that his dad had passed away years ago.
We never talked about it again and I’m sure he doesn’t remember that interaction, and if he does I trust that he hopefully doesn’t hold it against me. But MAN I die a little inside every time I remember that. If you happen to be reading this dude, I’m sorry about 16 year-old me’s social blunder, and I‘m really glad you seem to be doing so well. You were one of the nicest people at a really not-nice school :)
TL;DR: I found out my friend’s late father was a celebrity and didn’t believe him until he proved it.
